BEHIND THE SCENES
THE THREAD

Each thread is a single curve with 10 to 12 control points spaced evenly along it. That simple setup is what let the threads stretch, wrap, and loop through the machine. It’s also what makes everything that follows possible.

ANIMATING THE KNIT

Each control point is parented to an empty, an invisible marker in Blender that other objects can follow. I animated the empties through every point where the thread touches the machine, pulling the curve into place and tying the knit one loop at a time. A physics simulation could have done the job, but this approach was faster, more accurate, and fully under my control, which matters when the camera is close enough to see every detail.

THE MACHINE

The warp knit process uses two interlocking sets of needles, guides, and sinkers. I modeled and animated one unit, then arrayed it, repeating it automatically down the length of the machine. Animate once, copy many times: the most efficient kind of hard work.
